Rancho de Don Sam

Project Details

Acrylic, Oil

Size: 24" x 18"

Rancho de Don Sam was a commission I took for an old friend of mine whose father was turning 90 years old. He asked me to reproduce the following reference in the form of an oil painting to give to his father. The image is Samuel Sr., who is nicknamed, Don Sam, sitting in his ranch by the ocean that had been in his family for over 50 years. Sam Jr. believed that this was the most fitting image to commemorate him, as he seemed the happiest in his natural environment.

To date, I believe this painting has been one of the most meaningful for me to create. While I was honored to be painting such a meaningful family heirloom, I found that it gave me challenges in how I could render the vast expanse of fields without making the brushstrokes too general and letting the paint get too muddy. This experience was the definition of "trust what you see". In short, I had to let go of any preconceived notions I had of what I believed the nature elements should've looked like, and trust my reference instead.
